What determines a captain's salary?

Vessel size is the single biggest factor, but it's not the only one. Captains on busy charter yachts are managing a commercial operation — guest relations, charter scheduling, safety compliance, crew performance — and are paid accordingly. A captain on a private 50m yacht with a relaxed owner and minimal programme may earn less than one on a 40m that charters 25 weeks a year.

Flag state and coding matters too. Commercially coded vessels have stricter certification requirements and more regulatory oversight — captains who can operate them competently command higher pay. A Master 3000gt MCA certificate on a commercially coded 60m is worth considerably more than the same size vessel on a private flag.

Owner relationship is underrated. Captains who build long-term trust with an owner — who are genuinely invested in the yacht's operation and the owner's vision — tend to stay in post for years and see their salary increase accordingly. Captains who job-hop frequently often don't progress as quickly.

The required qualifications

To legally command a commercially coded yacht as captain, you need the appropriate MCA (or flag state equivalent) Master certificate for the vessel's gross tonnage:

  • MCA Yacht Master 200gt — required for vessels up to 200 gross tonnes (roughly up to ~35m depending on build)
  • MCA Master 500gt / 3000gt — required for larger vessels; the 3000gt covers most superyachts up to and including 80m+ vessels
  • GMDSS (Global Maritime Distress and Safety System) operator's certificate
  • MFA (Medical First Aid) certificate
  • ISPS (International Ship and Port Facility Security) officer training
  • Valid ENG1 medical

The RYA Yachtmaster Offshore with commercial endorsement is the stepping stone for those coming through the recreational route. Many captains started as deckhands, progressed through the deck ranks, and converted RYA qualifications to MCA certification over 8–15 years.

Benefits beyond the salary

Captain contracts typically include flights home, accommodation ashore during vessel downtime, a generous provisions budget, and in many cases a vehicle allowance or use of the vessel's car. On charter yachts, tip income is distributed via the captain — who usually receives the largest share of the crew pool.

Senior captains on large private yachts sometimes negotiate annual bonuses tied to the yacht's programme delivery or the owner's satisfaction. These can add 10–20% to the annual total.
